On this page we provide information concerning transport links to Lagos and all points west. We give details on which airlines fly to Faro International Airport and how to transfer from the airport to the western Algarve region. Quoted prices correct as at August 2006.
The following list is comprised of the main scheduled services to Faro. During the summer season a large number of charter flights operated by the tour companies swell the arrivals hall, but its a modern airport that has been expanded significantly over the last few years and transfer through baggage claim and customs is usually expedited quite swiftly.
BMI Baby / British Airways / easyJet / Flybe / Jet 2 / Monarch / TAP / Thomson Fly
Air Berlin / German Wings / Lufthansa
Aer Lingus / Air Finland / Austrian Airlines / Luxair / Transavia
By Bus
No direct routes from the airport; you have to transfer to the bus terminal (Estação Rodoviária) in Faro. The bus stop for the transfer is right outside the airport terminal and the timetable is posted on the sign. Buses are usually every half hour. It's Euro1.40 for the 10-15 minute journey into Faro and you are dropped a few yards from the coach station. Inside there is a digital timetable of destinations and coach numbers and the ticket kiosk is opposite that.- As for the buses you have to go into Faro to get to the station (pictured), which is about 50 metres before the bus terminal. The 'Linha do Algarve' is slow but pleasant (much nicer than the bus) taking about one and half hours to reach Lagos, winding its way through the countryside before following the coastline from Alvor bay to Lagos. Only 6 Euros for the journey but the last direct train is in the early afternoon so only possible for those arriving on a morning flight.
- The taxi rank is on the right-hand side as you leave the terminal. A trip to Lagos is Euro90 and for Praia da Luz Euro94. Additional charges for large luggage pieces. Tipping is expected but not compulsory.
There are over twenty companies offering car rental in the Algarve so it pays to shop around. The larger firms have kiosks in the terminal but if you go with the others they will have reps meet you as you leave the arrivals hall.
